Last week I was invited to an event to hear Karen Civil speak. For those of you who may not know who she is, here’s a quick run-down: According to her Twitter bio she is a Philanthropist. Author. Entrepreneur. But honestly those words simply do not do her any justice. She is a Cultural Artige’. Digital Renaissance Woman. Builder of Great Things. Karen Civil has had an insane impact on pop and specifically hip-hop culture simply by using the internet. From reading her book ‘Be You Live Civil’ you’ll learn that it all started from her building a fan site for the Backstreet Boys and Bodie from The Wire while growing up. This all made her realize the true power of technology. She has since crafted social media campaigns for artists and brands including Lil Wayne, YG and Beats by Dre. She is truly someone who has defined and created success on her own terms.
And who would pass up a chance to hear some major words of inspiration from her? Personally, I admire her work ethic and her grind. We are always learning, always growing and always transforming. It is so crucial to be a sponge to education, soaking up every piece of knowledge that you can receive.
The event was held in Miami’s popular art district, Wynwood by L’union Suite (French for unity makes strength), a Haitian-American blog. I always love networking events and mixing and mingling with people that are all putting themselves out there and looking to succeed in their businesses. There were h’ordeuvres, a mini open bar, and the aesthetic of the building and paintings was so beautiful overall.
Knowledge is cool, but it’s no fun to hoard it all for yourself. With that being said, I wanted to share with you all 3 lessons that Karen shared from the event:
1.Start on one business/idea that you’re passionate about, let it grow, and THEN branch out and do others!
In this day and age, people are obsessed with ‘fast money’. So much so that they neglect the true hustle of sticking to one idea and letting it grow. THAT’s how you build a legacy. You’ll never truly learn what you’re good at, or what your passion is if you’re constantly jumping from one business to the next. As Karen said, think of it like Oprah. She became REALLY good at one thing (broadcast journalism) then she branched out to other things. There’s no possible way that she would’ve been able to habdle everything at once and excel in them as greatly as she did. Greatness takes time. Learn to trust the process.
2. People close to you will call you crazy for following your dreams, that doesn’t mean you have to cut them off.
This was new to me…because so often we’re taught that if someone doesn’t support you they need to be cut off. However, sometimes people may think your ideas are outrageous because..THEY ARE. It doesn’t mean they love you any less, it just means that they’re protective of you and don’t want to see you hurt. We have to learn to stop being so hard on ourselves because that will open the door to understanding for others. Not everyone will see things from your point of view, it doesn’t make them a bad person, it doesn’t always make them a ‘hater’, it simply means that they view things differently in life. Our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful. Learn to not just accept yours, but others as well.
3. Don’t Let one negative thought ruin your day
This is such a major key to life. Protect your heart for all that you do flows from it! When you’re living your life in purpose, of course the devil is gonna get mad, of course he’s going to try to knock you off of your path, but you can’t let it. You always have to look at the bigger picture and realize that focusing on minuscule things and getting upset over them will never allow you to reach your true purpose. Some days it seems like one bad thing leads to another. And it does! You attract what you focus on. When one bad thing happens, don’t let it ruin your day, instead take the high road, and know that you have bigger fish to fry than the small things you’re focusing on!
