I think everyone has an internet ‘friend in their head’ and Niqua is that for me. We both have a love for fashion, have blogs and love thrifting. She currently resides in Atlanta, which is where I see myself moving in the next year or so. We both work 9-5’s in similar fields and have our businesses on the side, so I know she understands the 9-5, 5-9 hustle. Which is why I’m super excited about this guest blog post! She speaks more in depth about the struggle between having a corporate job and a side hustle. If this is you, or you are looking to do something similar this is definitely the perfect read!
There were many times where I wanted to say I don’t want to do this, I’m going to fail, and no one is going to support me, but I had to remind myself that you don’t fail until you quit. I live by that quote on a daily basis. Quitting is not an option.
I’m Niqua Jeanette, fashion blogger and avid thrifter who is chasing her goals every day. My blog and closet store, Thrift My fashion originated from the gems and excitement of fabulous thrift shopping. I believe thrifting has always been a huge market, but now it is getting very popular all around the U.S. My goal is to become the source of reference between finding your style within your thrifting adventures. Although my “real job” consists of working a 9-5 in Corporate America, I believe whatever side hustle you want to accomplish you should go after it.
Post graduate degree, many millennials feel the need to get a job or sit behind a cubicle to feel successful. That’s so not true! Success to me is actually finding out what you love and chasing that every day. Not to knock the corporate world, because most make a comfortable living from it, but it’s very important to know that there’s so much more out there. In my experience with coming to work Monday – Friday I find it hard to balance my real passion after work hours. That’s my excuse there. I’m telling myself it’s hard and many people are also. I think once we get out of that mindset of negativity, there is so much more to be accomplished.
Usually after I work I check my emails, and try research some up and coming trends that are out (especially now that fashion week is coming up). I then write down my budget of what I want to spend on my thrifting adventures for the week. Every weekend I try to stop by a thrift shop to see what fabulous items I can add to my site, while also preparing for new content I can give my readers. Even on 15 min breaks I try to interact with my followers just so I can stay approachable on social media.
Everyone is different, but I’m stating things in which I do because I want you all to know that it’s possible. Once you get past the wanting everything to be perfect and letting things flow, your side business will eventually bloom. Many people feel like they can’t blog because everyone is doing it or you’re not popular enough, but you never know who you might reach so it’s very important to keep going. As long as your following is loyal to you, you should never worry about how many people have read your blogs or purchased your items. If they rock with you and support you that’s all that matters.
So I’m ending this to say, working a 9-5 in the corporate world while chasing your dreams, is very possible. You have to put time into what you truly love to do and you will eventually see results. Life is about balance, and every entrepreneur should know how to find their middle ground.
