Our Roze Gold Spotlight is a platform that features upcoming businesses in the beauty, fashion, or lifestyle arena. This month we are featuring designer Vision Stylez. She and I met a few years ago in Tallahassee and I have watched her business grow due to her unwavering work ethic. She proves that everything comes to you in the right time if you work hard and believe in yourself. Check out more about Shakida and her business Vision Stylez below.
Shakida Harvey, also known as Kodak or Kodi, was born and raised in Titusville, FL. Growing up she was fascinated with every aspect of art, from photography to designing. Shakida received her start in fashion from her Uncle’s t-shirt business designing tees, doing friend’s pep rally outfits and distressing denim in high school. She eventually graduated from Astronaut High School in 2006 and attended college in Tallahassee, FL to pursue a degree in Mass Communications. After discovering that she wasn’t interested in Journalism anymore, she began to focus more on fashion. Shakida worked for Forever 21 and Wet Seal, where she learned more about fashion and styling. While working in retail she started an accessory business as well making feathered earrings which was soon named Vision Stylez. This business transitioned from earrings to distressed denim and her first sewing machine was purchased in November 2012 and her first design was created. Shakida decided to leave Tallahassee in 2013 and move back to her hometown, determined to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising at the International Academy of Design and Technology (Sanford-Brown College). In the midst of pursuing her degree, she started creating and designing custom clothes for my friends around the Tallahassee, Titusville and Orlando areas which evolved my business.
1. What inspired you to start your business?
Being a plus size girl it’s hard to find stylish, flavorful pieces so that made me start watching YouTube videos and putting things together.
2. What does Vision Stylez stand for?
Seeing the beauty of people through their style, I let people tell me what they want because they have to wear it.
3. I’ve been watching you for a while now, and I see that you make it a priority to get better each day in your business. How much time do you set aside each day to work on building your brand?
I think I spend usually 2-8 hours a day working on something. Sometimes I start at 9am and don’t stop until 3am. If I’m not sewing I’m researching what’s next.
4. What’s some advice you have for aspiring entrepreneurs that want to start their own clothing line?
Be patient. It doesn’t happen overnight and it sure doesn’t come easy. Do NOT listen to the people around you, usually only 2 out of 4 know fashion that’s you and your best friend!
5. What are your top social media sites for marketing and promoting?
Facebook and Instagram. But I like Facebook way more bc it’s so easy for people to share things you post.
6. What obstacles have you had to overcome to start your business?
Not believing in myself, almost giving up but as I notice my growth I’m just like “look at what you’re becoming!”
7. Where do you see your business in 5 – 7 years?
Opening a store, designing for celebrities attending the Grammys, Oscars, Met Gala, etc.
8. What’s the hardest part about owning your own business?
Doing everything by yourself. People don’t understand I’m the one taking orders, cutting, sewing, shipping, EVERYTHING! Lol
9. Do you have any specials/promotions going on right now?
Not at the moment but to stay up to date with any new creations and promos follow me on
